Cooler Cities: Social recipes for the next heat wave

The heat of summer 2026 was exceptional, but it will not remain an exception. Swiss cities are not built for heat waves this long and this intense. The Swiss Cities Association is therefore calling for heat protection to be treated as a national responsibility, just like flood protection.

The technical solutions are well known: unsealing, shading, greening, cooling, climate shelters and warning systems. But a heat-resilient city cannot be built one government agency at a time, nor through measures alone. Heat resilience is a question of coordination, social practices and societal cohesion.

How can people find complementary solutions based on their own needs and capacities, and take collective action to protect their fellow humans and their surroundings? How can measures be implemented together with key risk owners and affected people, and sustained over time? And what is needed for interventions such as climate shelters and climate buddies to actually be used and to reach those most vulnerable? We are looking for social innovations, new partnerships and societal interventions that prepare our cities for the next heat wave.

What you can expect:

  • Insight into our current perspectives on the key drivers and obstacles for heat-resilient cities and communities
  • Discussion on systemic tensions (lack of clear responsibilities vs. new structures, technical measures vs. social practices, administrative logic vs. neighborhood initiatives, acute emergencies vs. long-term adaptation, etc.)
  • Jointly refining the challenges as the basis for the 2027 call for proposals: Your input will shape our Call for Ideas!
  • Space for perspectives from practice, research, government, business, and civil society, as well as from people particularly affected by heat

This exploration aims to identify the most urgent challenges with the greatest leverage and to sharpen them into clear, actionable challenges that can become the starting point for new solutions.

Whether you work in a city department, run a cooperative or neighbourhood centre, or simply know your neighbourhood well: we look forward to your perspective.

Was du erwarten kannst:

  • Austausch zu systemischen Spannungen (mangelnde Zuständigkeiten vs. neue Strukturen, technische Massnahme vs. soziale Praxis, Verwaltungslogik vs. Quartierinitiative, akuter Notfall vs. langfristige Anpassung, usw.)
