DATA SCIENCE IN ONCOLOGY

Symposium Overview
The Idiap research institute in Martigny is launching a new public series of symposiums entitled Perspectives on AI. The aims are to

Bring together key partners The most efficient and impactful development and research are done in close collaboration between industrial and academic partners. With this symposium we aim to bring together both researchers and users to promote synergies and the development of Swiss-wide collaborations in AI.

Accelerate research in AI Bringing together researchers from various institutes located in the lemanic area and beyond, as well as high-profile international experts will promote exchange and benefit the students and postdocs by widening their research perspectives.

Increase public awareness There is a general misunderstanding about what AI is and how it can be used for society as opposed to replacing human beings. With this workshop we are aiming to engage the public in discussions to increase awareness but also to sensitize the population with key topics such as data privacy, data collection and storage.

The first symposium will explore the many ways how data science and artificial intelligence support the research and development in oncology. In this conference we will bring together companies interested in developing computational solutions for clinical oncology, clinical and academic researchers, and data scientists to promote the development of Swiss-wide academic-industrial-clinical collaborations in AI. We will discuss what are the current limitations and challenges for AI to drive clinical oncology forward, and what can be done to empower data-driven precision medicine in oncology.
Programme
9:00 - 9:30 Registration and light refreshments9:30 - 9:40 Opening remarksDr Raphaëlle Luisier, Group Leader at Idiap, SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics9:40 - 10:10 Data science for precision oncologyProf. Olivier Michielin, Head of the Center for Precision Oncology, CHUV, Head of the Department of Oncology, HUG, and Group Leader at the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics.10:10 - 10:40 NIPMAP: niche phenotype mapping of multiplex histology data bycommunity ecology.Dr. Jean Hausser, Associate Professor, Karolinska Institute, Sweden10:40 - 11:00 Coffee Break and Meet the speakers11:30 - 12:00 Applications of AI in oncology drug discoveryDr. Slavica Dimitrieva, Associate Director & Senior Principal Scientist, Oncology Data Science, Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research11:00 - 11:30 Interpretable artificial intelligence for cancer personalized medicineDr María Rodrίguez Martίnez, Group Leader, IBM12:00 - 13:00 Lunch13:00 - 13:15 Perspectives from ISREC Director on Data Science in OncologyProf. Elisa Oricchio, Director of ISREC and Associate Professor, EPFL 13:15 - 14:00 Round tableDuring this round table animated by Dr Benoit Dubuis, participants, including speakers, researchers from HES-SO and Idiap, and clinicians from Valais Hospital, will discuss possibilities, opportunities , and challenges that data science and AI offers for the oncology clinical research.14:00 - 16:00 Poster session, Booth companies and Networking16:00 - 17:00 Poster Awards and DrinksThe three best posters, voted by the audience, will be awarded 150.-, 100.- and 50.- CHF and will be advertised on the Perspectives on AI website. With his team, he researches how cancer cells escape the immune system by combining experiments, data science and mathematical theory. He authored 34 publications which have been cited over 9000 times.Dr María Rodrίguez Martίnez, Technical Leader of Systems Biology, IBM Research Europe, Zurich, associated member of the Department of Biology, ETH. Originally trained as a physicist, Dr Martinez became interested in computational biology during her postdoctoral training at the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel). Her research focuses on understanding cancer dysregulation mechanisms to develop computational approaches for cancer personalized medicine. To support this area of research, she has led two large EU-funded consortia focused on prostate cancer and pediatric cancers. As a computational biologist, her research lies at the intersection of mechanistic and artificial intelligence models, with a strong interest in developing interpretable deep learning approaches. Her team has developed interpretable approaches for analysing single-cell and drug sensitivity data. More recently, she is interested in modelling the interaction between cancer and the immune responses to investigate cancer immunotherapies.Prof. Olivier Michielin, Head of the Center of Precision Oncology, CHUV, Head of the Department of Oncology, HUG, and Group Leader at the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics.Prof. Olivier Michielin obtained a Masters of Physics in 1991 at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and a Medical Degree from the University of Lausanne in 1997. He pursued his PhD training under the supervision of Jean-Charles Cerottini (Ludwig Institute) and Martin Karplus (Harvard and Strasbourg Universities, Chemistry Nobel Prize Laureate 2013). He was appointed Group Leader of the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics in 2002 and became an Assistant Professor and Privat Docent at the Medical Faculty of Lausanne in 2004 and 2005, respectively. In parallel, he has trained as a medical oncologist and obtained his board certification in 2007 at the Department of oncology of the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) where he is currently heading the melanoma clinic. He was appointed Associate Professor in 2010 and full Professor in 2019. Prof. Olivier Michielin is mainly focused on translational oncology, developing new molecularly defined therapeutic approaches based on original bioinformatics techniques developed in his laboratory, as well as melanoma clinical trials at the Lausanne University Hospital. In 2016, Prof. Olivier Michielin was appointed Head of the Center for Precision Oncology within the Department of oncology from the CHUV and in October 2022 Head of the Department of Oncology of the HUG.Dr Slavica Dimitrieva, Associate Director & Senior Principal Scientist at the Oncology Data Science department, Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, Switzerland.Slavica Dimitrieva works as an Associate Director & Senior Principal Scientist at the Oncology Data Science department at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research in Basel. She is passionate about applying AI on multi-modal data for oncology drug discovery and precision medicine. Slavica has a background in Computer Science and a PhD in Computational Biology from the EPFL in Lausanne. During her studies, she received an ETH Medal for her Master thesis at ETH Zurich, and later a Best Graduate Paper Award by the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics.
