About this event

What does the future hold for migration, refugees, mixed migration and irregular mobility? What is the future labour migration and asylum space, considering the shift towards increased nationalism and moves against multinationalism at a time when the world is facing global problems that need coherent joint approaches? How will the issues of displacement and forced migration be affected by inequality, poor governance, environmental stressors and the international community’s response to these challenges? Can we realistically predict or forecast what the future trends will be?

The MMR2019 focuses on the future of mixed migration. In the different essays we will explore the effect of change in a broad range of areas such as the securitisation of migration, the climate, artificial intelligence, the economy, demographics and politics. The MMR will include regional migration outlooks as well as interviews with a wide range of experts and thinkers coming from the different disciplines covered in the report, UN officials as well as political pundits and leaders, and the individual stories of refugees and migrants on the move.

The presentation of the MMR19 will be followed by a panel discussion on the effects of securitisation, climate change and artificial intelligence and automation on the future of mixed migration with Tuesday Reitano (Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime), Madeline Garlick (UNHCR) and Jonathan M. Ledgard (Director of future Africa initiative at EPFL).
