Localization in Action: From Intent to Operating Systems

Localization in Action: From Intent to Operating Systems

Overview

Explore how locally led models can reshape power, partnerships, AI and data - and turn localisation from intent into lasting action.

Localisation and “shifting the power” are widely recognised as essential to making global development more sustainable, effective and accountable. Yet moving activities closer to communities does not necessarily change who makes decisions, controls resources or bears responsibility. In technology-enabled programmes, choices concerning digital tools, procurement, data and artificial intelligence often remain centralised.

How can organisations move beyond good intentions and isolated pilots—and make locally led, globally supported collaboration part of how they operate?

The Geneva Innovation Movement and WeRobotics invite members of Geneva’s international and innovation communities to an interactive learning event on localisation in action. Together, we will explore how localisation can become an organisational operating system: one that embeds local expertise and redistributes decision-making, resources and accountability while remaining connected to global knowledge, networks and support.

Agenda

The evening will introduce a tried-and-tested Glocalisation model developed in the Tech4Good sector and examine what must change within organisations for locally led approaches to become responsible, scalable and repeatable. Particular attention will be given to the growing importance of ICT, data governance and AI: who selects and governs technology, how responsibilities can be shared, and how digital systems can remain locally owned and accountable.

Combining expert input, a curated conversation, and informal peer exchange, the event will translate broad principles into practical organisational choices. Participants will consider possible entry points across governance, funding, procurement, partnerships, data and technology—and reflect on how these can be applied in their own work.

The session is designed for an audience of thought-shapers, decision-makers, innovators and practitioners from international organisations, academia, the private sector, social-impact organisations and globally connected communities. It will offer space to challenge assumptions, learn from concrete experience and build relationships with peers who are already testing—or are ready to adopt—new approaches to localisation.

Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of why localising activities alone is not enough, insight into a practical operating model for locally led Tech4Good collaboration, and concrete ideas for turning localisation into durable organisational change.
