Lunch Talk - Thermal Networks

About this event

Thermal Networks – Challenges and Outlook, presentation given by Tobias Sommer, Stefan Mennel (HSLU)

Thermal grids combined with storages are essential for including more renewables in urban energy systems. Renewables and waste heat are often intermittent by nature and available at diverse locations distant from the consumers. Thermal grids equipped with storages can transport thermal energy and balance supply and demand.

At sufficiently low temperatures, thermal grids allow for cooling. Demand for cooling is increasing with climate warming. However, operating these low-temperature grids is challenging because established concepts for “traditional” high-temperature district heating are no longer valid.

This lunch talk will:

  • provide a general overview on thermal grids in Switzerland and Europe,
  • present new network designs, and
  • highlight challenges for future dissemination
