Make a tie-dyed scarf – using bacteria!

The textile dyeing industry is one of the most environmentally polluting in the world – but is there an alternative?

Yes! Dyeing fabrics by co-culturing them with naturally pigment-producing bacteria is an emerging sustainable alternative. Gain hands-on experience in the SPH Life Science Lab and create your very own bacterially dyed fabrics!

In this workshop, you will learn why some bacteria naturally produce pigments and the basics of sterile culturing techniques. You will use this knowledge in the lab to tie-dye your very own take-home foulard (a square silk scarf) using chromogenic bacteria.

No prior lab experience required.

Please note: finished scarves can be collected 1 week after the event, either at SPH Central or in the SPH Life Science Lab (HPM E22).

Registration

This is an event for ETH students and can host 10 participants. The number of participants is limited to give you personalized support. Please register only if you are sure you can come on the day and time indicated. If something happens and you cannot come, cancel your registration as soon as possible. Please do not cancel last minute!
