How did I get on the list?

In an academic sea of sharks, you all have been identified as dolphins: kind and clever people doing amazing work!

Where did this idea come from?

The stellar Women of OB group has been active on Facebook--and beyond--for years. So how about a f2f meeting?  According to my research, it's even better for fostering connections if the context is more playful; and, it's also more sustainable if it's a place to which we're already traveling.

Question 3

Can I show up spontaneously?

Accepted Answer

Our private room (where the karaoke and drinks will be) is limited to 25 people.  But, if we've more than 25 interested persons, others can definitely pay their own way and mingle in the restaurant (it's well-rated!) But, the karaoke and drinks in the private room are only for the first 25.

Why is it limited to only women?

Why not? We also want to create a safe and festive space for women* at the Academy, so we crafted our invite list accordingly.

Question 5

Can I bring a friend?

We invited so many dolphins (see above) that we hope some of your friends are already on the list and/or RSVPed to join us. If not, this is a chance to meet some new friends.

Question 6

Can I bring my partner (or another family member)?

Accepted Answer

Is your partner a woman* in management? Then, sure (as long as there is still availability and you RSVP for them, too). If not, then unfortunately and despite our desire to be inclusive/family-friendly, it looks like it will be logistically tricky (e.g., fire codes and all that...)

What if my plans change?

Accepted Answer

We strive to create a full and festive atmosphere! So, given our limited space, if you RSVPed but your plans change, please cancel your RSVP. If that doesn't work (or it's last-minute), contact Jamie (jamie.gloor @ unisg.ch) ASAP so someone else can join.

Who are the masterminds of all of this?

Florence Villeseche suggested the location. The rest (i.e., vision, funding, org, invite list, etc.) is Jamie Gloor. We care deeply about fostering community and collaboration among women* in management and at the Academy; we hope this might be the start--and fuel--for something beautiful!

Question 9

Does the name of the restaurant have any meaning?

No, "Cocks and Cows" apparently refers to the chicken/wings and burgers the restaurant serves and has nothing at all to do with the event--we chose it for its karaoke and its location.

Question 10

What if I can't (or don't want to) sing karaoke?

Accepted Answer

We aim to be inclusive, including those who can't (or don't) want to sing. But to reiterate: this is about enjoying ourselves, reconnecting, and festively warming up for the Academy together--not about vocal performance. So: low stakes, safe space (and there are plenty of duets/group medlies ;-) ).

Question 11

I have a time conflict. Can I just come for part of the time?

We know how busy the Academy can be. But, this room has a strict space limit of 25 and a strict time limit of 2 hours. That, paired with the unlimited drinks per person which cannot be transferred, means we hope you will join us for the whole time (if possible).

Question 12

I don't drink alcohol. Is that a problem?

Accepted Answer

Of course not! You can also enjoy unlimited mocktails, on request. And the karaoke is not contingent on what you're drinking (even if we *think* we sing better after a glass or two...)

Do you have to sing about your research?

Accepted Answer

We welcome creativity (e.g., if you're researching AI, feel free to try "Mr. Roboto")! But no: you do not have to create your own, new songs and can just stick to the classics here. Jamie, for example, won't stop believin'...
