About this event

[German below]

This event is part of the Networking Event Series powered by Innosuisse.

We are inviting you to join us in addressing the question: ESG vs. Sustainability - Are we measuring the right things?

In less than 20 years, the ESG movement (Environmental, Social & corporate Governance) has grown from a corporate social responsibility initiative - launched by the United Nations in 2006 - into a global phenomenon. Representing more than US$30 trillion in assets under management by 2018 (GreenBiz), it is expected that ESG assets will rise to more than 50 trillion US$ by 2025 (Bloomberg) - more than a third of the $140.5 trillion in projected total assets under management.

While the uprising of ESG criteria isn’t under question, it’s important to understand the relationship between ESG and Sustainability. Even though some are using the terms ESG and sustainability nearly interchangeably, this isn’t always possible or useful and can cause confusions. One example of the controversy surrounding this topic was the recent Tesla-exclusion from the S&P 500 ESG Index, which led to a lot of discussions and open questions we want to address:

  • Do the aspects environmental, social and governance describe the sustainability of a company sufficiently?
  • Do we need to weigh some aspects more than others?
  • Should we include other variables?
  • Which existing frameworks (for both ESG and sustainability) do we use, and how could they be improved?
  • Can sustainability even be reduced to a clear set of variables?

We look forward to two short inputs to spark the discussion by:

  • Mahendra Gunasekera, Senior ESG officer, responsAbility
  • Aurelia Figueroa, Global Head of Sustainability, Breitling

Moderated by Philipp Staudacher, SDG evangelist, radicant bank

Join us at responsAbility for this event to better understand the connection between ESG criteria and sustainability and discuss the question: “Are we measuring the right things?”

  • Mahendra Gunasekera, Senior ESG-Beauftragter, responsAbility
  • Aurelia Figueroa, Global Head of Sustainability, Breitling
