This Space Café WebTalk will feature Prof Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla, Chair of the Executive Board of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), in conversation with Torsten Kriening, publisher of SpaceWatch.Global.

Climate change demands our action – record from space, analyze, act

Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla studied mechanical engineering at Ruhr University Bochum and the Technical University of Darmstadt, and received her doctorate from RUB in 1995. She went on to work for the former Hahn-Meitner Institute in Berlin and at the Technical University of Berlin for a number of years. In 2001, she was appointed to a teaching position at RUB. From 2003, Kaysser-Pyzalla was a professor at the Institute of Materials Science and Technology of the Vienna University of Technology. Following her work there, she was appointed Director and then Managing Director of the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH in Dusseldorf, and was appointed professor at RUB. In 2008 she became the Scientific Director of the Helmholtz Centre for Materials and Energy in Berlin, which was created under her leadership through the merger of two predecessor institutions. Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla has served as President of the Technical University of Braunschweig since 1 May 2017. She took up her new position as Chair of the Executive Board of the German Aerospace Center on 1 October 2020.

In this webtalk, Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla will discuss topics of expertise in fast data processing infrastructures and big data analysis, skills in applying artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to various Earth observation datasets, and satellite-based and airborne remote sensing. Small satellite missions can be technology drivers for the development of compact Earth observation instruments, as for example the DESIS payload or Co2Image. Due to comparable lower costs, R&D in technology, sensor systems, and novel EO applications can be tested and evaluated. Small satellite missions could continue to contribute to climate-related issues. CO2Image mission, a technology demonstrator mission is planned to show that, with the proposed approach, it is in principle possible to reliably quantify 90% of CO2 emissions from point sources.
