This event consists of two parts:
The Stigma of Mental Disorders - End of the Story?
In the first part of this event, we will explore the precise definition of stigma and how we as a society can change our attitude and mindset towards the mentally ill in a sustainable fashion.
Psychiatry in the Movies - Mirroring Societal Trends
In the second part the focus will be on the depiction of mental illnesses on social media (and movies) and how on one hand, they mirror societal processes while on the other hand, shaping the image society has of mental illnesses.
About the Speaker
Dr. Wulf Rössler studied Medicine (1969-1975) and Psychology (1976-1981) at the University of Heidelberg and ended his studies with a medical degree (MD) and a psychological degree (MSc). He started his professional career in 1981 at the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim (Germany), where he was appointed as Director of the State Model Program in Psychiatry (Baden-Württemberg/Germany) 1983-1987.
Wulf Rössler was from 1996 to 2013 a Full Professor of Clinical and Social Psychiatry at the University of Zurich and Head of the University Department of General and Social Psychiatry. 2009-2016 he was the Director of the Zurich Program for Sustainable Development of Psychiatric Services, a comprehensive research program with seven large-scale projects covering psychiatric epidemiology and mental health services research. 2009-2017 he was a fellow of the Collegium Helveticum, a joint research institute between the University of Zurich and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH), where he took responsibility for several research projects.
2013-2016 he was Senior Professor at the University of Lüneburg (Germany), where he was also appointed as the Head of the Competence Centre for Health. In Lüneburg he was also the Head of a Health Services Research Team in the framework of the Innovation Incubator, a large-scale research programme funded by the EU (2010-2015).
Since 2013 he is Professor of Post-Graduation at the Medical Faculty of the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil).
Since 2017 he is a Senior Professor at the Charité, University Medicine Berlin (Germany).
He is a member of the editorial board a number of scientific journals. Currently he is the Specialty Chief Editor of Frontiers in Public Mental Health.
He has been the President and Vice-President of various professional organisations, e.g. member of the Board of the European Psychiatric Association. Between 2015 and 2019 he was President of the International Federation of Psychiatric Epidemiology.
