SONIC MATTER

Das neue Zürcher Festival ist eine Einladung, Musik in ihren unzähligen Formen zu erleben. In Performances verbinden sich Klangkünste mit Bild, Sprache und Raum, während die «border line club culture» den Übergang zwischen experimenteller Elektronik und Tanzbarkeit zelebriert. Auf Klangparcours kann den Geräuschen von Zürich wortwörtlich nachgegangen werden, während eine Hör- und Video-Lounge in der kalten Jahreszeit rund um die Uhr zum Aufwärmen und Verweilen offensteht. Ensemble- und Orchesterkonzerte bringen aktuelle komponierte Musik zu Gehör oder führen Welten von digitaler Klangkunst bis zu frei improvisierter Musik zusammen. Mit dem Gastfestival Novas Frequências Rio de Janeiro und dem _openlab wendet sich SONIC MATTER Künstler:innen aus Nord- und Südamerika zu. Zugleich werden im _openlab und beim Symposium Fragen der Nachhaltigkeit und des Zusammenlebens gemeinsam reflektiert – und die Frage, was Musik damit zu tun hat.

Im Hintergrund schwingt dabei immer wieder das Festivalthema «TURN» mit, das Veränderungen im Grossen und Kleinen nachspürt: von Umbrüchen über unmerkliche Verschiebungen bis hin zu bewussten Perspektivwechseln.

SONIC MATTER lädt ein, gemeinschaftlich diese Erlebnispfade zu begehen, die sich biegen und winden, auf Abwege führen und neue Schneisen schlagen, die uns auf Graten balancieren und in die Ferne blicken lassen, unkartiertem Land entgegen.

This new Zurich festival is an invitation to experience music in its innumerable forms. Its performances will combine sound arts with images, language and space, while the «border line club culture» will celebrate the transition between experimental electronics and danceability. «Sound Parcours» will enable participants to track the sounds of Zurich (literally), while a listening and video lounge will be open around the clock in the cold season of the year in order to offer people a place to warm up and linger. Ensemble and orchestral concerts will offer contemporary composed music, and will also bring together different worlds – from digital sound art to free improvised music. Together with our guest festival Novas Frequências Rio de Janeiro and with the _openlab SONIC MATTER explores artists from North America and South America. At the same time in the _openlab and during the symposium, issues of sustainability and coexistence will be debated together, as will the question as to the role that music can play in this.

The festival theme is «TURN» and will be a constant background presence, tracing changes on both a large and a small scale: from general upheavals via imperceptible shifts to conscious changes of perspective.

SONIC MATTER is an invitation to walk these paths together as they wind and twist, leading us down remote byways and cuttings, balancing us on cliff-edge tracks and letting us gaze into distant vistas of unmapped lands.
