Unmasking the Reality of Lung Cancer Society
If You Have Lungs... Imagine going to bed feeling great and the next morning you are told you have one of the over 50 forms of cancer of the lungs. Well, that is the diagnosis Diane Colton founder of Unmasking the Reality of Lung Cancer Society heard. In truth, lung cancer is not a "smoker's" cancer.
Being diagnosed with a form of lung cancer is not how anyone wants to start their day, week, year. Even worse than dealing with death looking you in the face is finding out that your illness went undetected for years because your tumor knows how to mask itself from your immune system. In addition, lung cancer is hidden behind the mask of stigma, myths, misinformation, and disinterest.
Unmasking the Reality of Lung Cancer was born not only because these stigmas exist but also because each of them can and does kill. Multiple times, I have felt the sting of stigma + myths + misinformation and, worst of all, disinterest. I am fortunate that my personal journey has left me very healthy and able to take on the role of advocate, helping the health system and the public understand what’s happening and impressing upon them that they can make a difference. Every future moment can be changed by how we live the current moment
As long as she has the ability Diane will continue to help people understand the reality of lung cancer. Every year in Canada lung cancer impacts over 300,000 people! It is not just those who are diagnosed, but everyone connected to them and whose lives it touches
